Just did an interview with the homie Rain. He’s also featured on MusicOnPlay Vol III (coming soon). We talked about his come-up, mixtapes, the internet, debut album, and more.

In early 2006, he released his first major mixtape “Only in America”. The tape created a huge buzz in the Carolinas and made its way up the East Coast. Instantly, Rain became the talk of the industry and the streets to be the next unsigned artist to make an impact in the music world. While the mixtape was heating up the streets, Rain continued to keep his name buzzing by releasing over one hundred freestyles and songs that were featured on national mixtapes. Fall 2006, he teamed up with heavy weight Hip-Hop website Hip-HopGame.com. He released yet another mixtape “Another Day another Dollar”. By the end of 2006, every major, independent record company made offers to add him to their roster. While pursuing a record deal, Rain took notice of the climate in the industry and found that he needed to start his own company. Thus, First In Flight Entertainment was born. Representing his home state of NC, he continued to build his buzz with his consistent grind for making music. This landed him a feature on the first street DVD in the country, Smack DVD (Vol. 13). In February 2008, he received an honorable feature in Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype. Which lead to other appearances in major magazines such as XXL and Ozone. With his energized performance on MTV’s TRL, appearances on BET, Thsis50.com, Green Lantern Show, and the list goes on. Rain is one of the only unsigned artist that has had this much major media coverage. Chosen out of hundreds as a finalist for BMI’s 2009 Unsigned Artist Showcase, Rain performed his certified hit single Nuvo & Ciroc off his highly anticipated EP “The Fly Gangsta”, which is due to be released early summer 2009.

What’s good Rain, how ya doin brother?

Rain: I am feeling great. Thanks for asking. Working hard and enjoying life.

How did you come up with ur artistic name “Rain”, or did somebody else name u that?

Rain: Rain represents the new beginning. It represents growth. The name came from me feeling like musically I am always refreshing and coming with new ideas and having the need to stand out. My real name is Randy so its close. It was my nickname before it was rap name.

Can you tell us a lil bit about your come up, and how did the internet affect your career?

Rain: I feel like the internet really helped me break through. A lot of people wouldnt have knew who i was if it wasnt for the internet. I started releasing a lot of mixtapes a few years back and I used the internet to get it to everybody all at once. Of course before that I would press up a bunch of cds and hit the streets. I did it all from taking songs to Djs personally to performing at all the showcases, I still do honestly. I think the internet just made things alot easier. Artist still shouldnt depend entirely on the internet. You still have to touch the concrete, you feel me.

You’ve put out a lot of mixtapes coming up, what’s your fav. from them all?

Rain: Its hard for me to pick a favorite but I really enjoyed the two tapes I did with Don Cannon. “Highly Unanticipated” and “American Dreamin 2 Money over Fame”. Those have some of my favorite songs on them.

When do you plan to release your debut album, and what are your expectations for it?

Rain: I’m about to release a album called “Life in Marvelous Times” this summer. Its under Hoola Media/Universal Records. My expectations for myself is always high. I want to make a classic but I never think about how many people will go out and buy it as long as the people that does buy it enjoys it.

What are your thoughts about the state of hip hop right now?

Rain: Its cool. Theres a few new artist I like. Its not the same hip hop I fell in love with and its possible that it never will be but its alright. Every now and then I hear something that makes me throw my hat across the room.

Do you visit hip hop websites? if yes, which are your fav’s / if not.. why?

Rain: Yes I do visit all the sights. I dont have a favorite because they all usually have the same music. There is a few I fuck with heavier than others but I like them all.

Where can your fans find you online… are you on twitter, myspace, facebook?

Rain: myspace.com/rain910 | twitter.com/rain910 and my name on facebook is Rain Nc.

Any last message for your fans and M.O.P. visitors?

Rain: Thanks for the support and I hope it continues.

What’s up folks…
Here’s another exlusive interview. This time it’s with the up and coming left coast rapper Melo Kan.

One of the pioneers for the New West promises to be Melo Kan. Born and raised in Southern California on the streets of Rialto, Compton, and South Central Los Angeles, Melo began his rap grind full force in 2001.

Read the interview after the jump!

1. What’s up Melo Kan, what have you been up to lately?

What’s going on family? I’m feeling real blessed right now. I just touched down from Africa last night; Amazing.

2. Can you tell us more about your come-up, and why did you choose rap?

I have been rapping since I was a kid, but really didn’t begin to take it seriously till about my second year in college. I was in a group called “Klas~sick” with two other extremely talented rhyme slingers. It was during that time I went thru the mc battle phase and really getting my feet wet with performing. As life began to shape for us, we chose different paths. So I guess the game really chose me. I love everything about music from creating to performing; I feel destined for this.

3. Do you only listen to rap music?

No way! I listen to classical music, rock n roll, classic rock, oldies, you name it. I get inspired by other genres more than I do by rap actually. Rap is uninspiring at the moment because of the state the industry is in. It’s a real bummer! (Laughing)

4. When are you planning to drop your new album?

New album “Heart of the City” slated to drop late spring/early summer! I am extremely excited about this one.

5. Who have you had the pleasure of working with til now as far as Producers and Artist’s goes?

I’ve worked with J-Dawg out of Slim Thug’s Boss Hogg Outlaws camp, super producer THX, Bad Lucc, FOC, and Those Chosen, just to name a few.

6. Do you have a record deal or are you still looking for one?

Realistically I am not in search of a record deal. I want to solidify my brand as an independent and then possibly look for a label deal. I have a few artists of my own that really push the line on this Blokk Movement style of music, so seeing their development is just as important as my own success.

7. How did the internet affect your career, and where can your fans find you online?

The internet really put me in touch with fans that would have otherwise never heard of me, so shout out to the nerd who created the internet (laughing). My fans can find me on twitter @blokkmovement or on facebook in the Blokk Movement Group or if all else fails www.melokan.com! I’m always there. If anyone wants to be a part of the movement hit up info@4lbmusik.net and you will be connected for life.

08. Any last words for your fans and/or MusicOnPlay visitors?

Shout-out to the big homey Bloody Chuck! To my fans, I love y’all! Without your ear I would be a voice in the dark. I’m a real dude so when you see me in the streets holla Blokk Movement and I will respond by saluting. One- love.

Here’s another exclusive MusicOnPlay interview! This time Chris interviewed the up and coming producer David E Beats.

Check it out after the jump!

Chris: So who is David E. Beats? That can’t be your real name is it? Lol…

David: No its not, lol. My real name is David Earl Long, but I was called David E when I started rapping, and when I made beats, then it changed to David E Beats.

Chris: So i understand you possess a lot of talent. You play the guitar, sing, and produce. How would you describe your ability to do all these things effectively?

David: Well, i rap, produce, and play guitar, and being able to do all effectively means that I spend alot of time practicing. I focus on one at a time, until I master the style that i have created for each skill. I focus on sounding like David E Beats, not like Jimi Hendrix or Swizz Beats.

Chris: Do you find it easier that you are able to do all these things? Can you just record a beat, and then know exactly what you want to say?

David: Knowing how to do so many things does make the recording process easier. I dont have to rely on other musicians; I can relay my thoughts directly onto the track the way I want them.

Chris: Yo u watchin this game? Your from the D.C. area, and are now in N.Y. Who do you thinks gonna win this game, the Redskins or the Giants?

David: Honestly, I dont watch TV. All my time is spent either practicing, writing, or working on my career. And I am NOT a skins fan, so I will say the Giants, lol.

Chris: Yo you got this track, “Over Here.” Its got a crazyyy mix of sound. What kind of thought goes into the tracks you record and produce?

David: When I produce and record a record I just think of what it is I want to say. Then after that it is simply putting the sounds together in a cohesive way. I have always been a fan of instrumentally big sounding records. And that is usually the sound I aim for when I produce a record.

Chris: We about to wrap up the year. What’s left on the plate for David E. Beats?

David: Just doing alot of shows at the moment. I am in the process of preparing for bigger things, essentially stepping my game up to a more professional level. I am working with my team on developing me fully as an artist, then working on my credintials in the press and performance stage.

Chris: Ok, cool man. So what plans do you have this New Years? Any resolutions?

David: My only resolution is to constantly move forward in my career. For New Years i plan to just hang out with my Girl and a bottle of champagne!

Chris: I know thats rite. Im bout to get 2 bottles. Any projects coming next year?

David: I will be working on a new album most of 2010. I will be starting the production phase soon!
No name yet, sorry!

Chris: So where the links at bro? How do we find you?

David: My single, “Over Here” is on iTunes now.
Where did you get the name Fly-C? Are you just that cool? Hahah…

Im kinda cool like that lol.. I got the name fooling around in the studio, I used to go by the name Young Chillz and my tag on tracks would be me saying YC. One day I was in a studio session recording a record called obsession for the ladies and I said FLY-C instead of YC and my boys who were listening while I was recording thought it was a dope name and told me I should run with it. So ive been running with it ever since then.

Well it comes down to these games now! Were in the playoffs so we have to shut these other teams down! Haha. We stopped our losing streak so now its show time! I have faith in my sox, so im positive we’ll be making it to the world series!

Good fuckin asnwer. Sox my shiit.

Same here man! I run with all my cities teams!

The Pats tho? How you think Brady going to do today against Flacco and the Ravens?

Brady is a beast. Hes been slipping up a little bit but later on in the season when we rack up some more wins he’ll pick it up more and more. Maybe even take home another super bowl.

What’s your affiliation with the Trackslayerz?

The Trackslayerz are my family. Ive been working closely with the Trackslayerz for about 4 years now. Im one of the 1st artist on there label “Soundwave Music Group.” Were all really close and work hard. Ive watched each member in the Trackslayerz grow musically. Its a blessing to work with them and actually be apart of the team.

Love homie, that’s what it is.

Where you at with “The Business Proposal?”

“The Business Proposal” is complete. Im waiting for the artwork to come back, and im doing a little more promo before the release but the mixtape came out amazing. I cant wait for the world to hear it. Its a very strong conceptual project that came out more like an album, I hope everyone loves the project. Its dope haha.

Are there any features on it outside of the Trackslayerz family?

For this project I didnt want to go all out and get the biggest features on it for the simple fact that peoples attention would be more on the feature and not me, so I kept the big features off this project. With it being my first big project, I want people to get to know me and love my music itself and not because of who I have on a record. Trackslayerz produced the whole project except one record, its a freestyle I did a while back showing my team the evolution of my flow. They heard it and immediately knew that im growing as an artist and shortly after the whole TBP project was in effect.

In a previous interview with TrackLeaker.com, you said that Kanye West would be the one artist you’d like to work with. Has your thoughts changed at all since the whole Taylor Swift x VMA incident?

Not at all. I think what he did was inappropriate and immature but he hasnt changed to me musically. That didnt make him a bad artist or a bad producer, he just looked bad for stealing someones shine. At the end of the day it takes a real man to apologize and recognize when hes wrong. Kanye knows that he was wrong and the bonus is Taylor Swift forgave him and she got to give her acceptance speech at the end of the VMA’s which I think was bigger then how she was originally going to give her speech. No one was expecting her to give her speech still. I thought it was great that Beyonce did what she did.

Would you hit Amber Rose tho? Kekekeke…

Hahaha..nah loll. How bout them Red Sox!

So TBP is being released with Buck Marley?

Yea and now Yk2daily.net presented with the TrackSlayerz. Im glad they want to be apart of my project. Shout out to Buck, Kingz, & Miss Passion.

And how are the other blogs treating you?

A lot of them are showing me love, Ive been getting great write ups and a decent amount of downloads. I hope it continues because im going to continue to put out great music for everyone. I want to be on everything there is! Im looking to take this game over!

Your Trackslayerz logo looks like a Bionicle. Who designed that jont? Kekeke…

My homie Toxic Graphics! Hes a great graphic designer. Hes done some great work for DJ Skee. I think were getting a new logo soon.

Yo so ive noticed your work ethic following you on Twitter. How would you describe this drive?

I beleive that hard work pays off, so im constantly in the studio. Just about every night im recording a record or making a beat. If im not in the studio im attending an event or a show. Networking is key! This is my everyday life: I wake up to music, go to sleep to music in the 4 hours that I actually do get to sleep. Haha. Twitter is great for networking! thats how the interview came about…lol.

How are the haters? Established any enemies yet?

No not at all. If I do have haters they havent said much. Ive been getting great responses every time I put out a record. They could hate me or love me, the fact is both parties know my name. I dont think there is a greater feeling then someone knowing your name and loving what you do. No enemies for me though, not yet.

Share the love homie. Where can your fans reach Fly-C?

Everyone can reach out to me on twitter I dont really be on myspace anymore someone else is running that haha, but they can reach me at www.twitter.com/ItsFlyC. I respond to everyone! lol.

Anything else you wanna cover?

I wanna shout out the fam, Trackslayerz. Shout out to the whole Soundwave Music Group, J-Cuse, my brother Dex Le, Sonnie, Chilla Jones! Big shout out to www.MusicOnPlay.net for having me!

Dope fam. I preciate you takin all this time to do this!

Thanks alot man! I appreciate you having me! It was a great interview. This has to be the best interview Ive had as well, finally some different questions haha.

In an exclusive interview with MusicOnPlay, the world famous DJ Smallz speaks on his come up, internet, Southern Smoke mixtape serie, new album, and much more.

“When i first came into the game i was known as an “internet” dj
because i used the internet and advances in technology to my advantage
when most weren’t. I still do… it’s no secret.” said DJ Smallz.

Interview by Chuck

read more after the jump!

1. What’s up Smallz, how you doin brotha… what have you been up to lately?

I’m currently working on my Southern Smoke album, an incredible
compilation featuring your favorite artists and producers – single on
the way. My artist development brand Fear Factor Music Group is a
serious movement in the streets right now, breaking new music and new
artists such as Yo Gotti and OJ Da Juiceman. I got the internet goin’
nuts with the hottest video on demand service in south at
SouthernSmoke.tv and speaking of the internet, don’t forget to check
out my official website and blog DJSmallz.com.

2. I first heard about you from your mixtape serie “Southern Smoke” but can you tell us a lil’ bit more about your start, first mixtapes etc.?

My head was really into school. I got a scholarship to college and
everything. I was DJin’ as a hobby ever since middle school and I was
ready to get my club game poppin in high school. The first southern
smoke CD was really a demo for me to get into clubs. It was the
hottest southern music put together, mixed by me. People passed the CD
around in high school and clubs, word of mouth spread and one thing
led to another. That’s how the southern smoke movement really began.

3. From all the tapes you made, which one’s your favorite and why?

Probably (Southern Smoke) volume 6 because it was my first major host… i did that one
with hip hop pioneer Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew. Uncle Luke is a living
legend and the reason why albums today carry the parental advisory
sticker – he fought for his lyrics! It was crazy and exclusive –
Uncle Luke had never hosted a mixtape before and I got him out to do
it.

4. So except your dj career, do you do anything else hip hop related?

I’ve been putting a lot of time and energy into the Southern Smoke
College Tour, the last couple years. The SSCT works hand in hand with
several major universities across the south to provide new and
exciting entertainment, as well as engaging and informative outreach
to thousands of students, such as last year’s important youth voting
drive. This year, the tour will reach 10 major campuses beginning
October 30th at University of South Florida. Artists such as Flo Rida,
Gorilla Zoe, Yo Gotti, and 2 Pistols have been part of the tour in the
past. If you have a school that’s interested or you would like to be a
sponsor in the tour, hit us up at www.SouthernSmokeCollegeTour.com.

5. What can we expect from DJ Smallz in the near future?

Aside from the DJ Smallz brand, I’ve established three major companies
in my multimedia empire. I’ve created SouthPromo.com, a marketing and
advertising firm specializing in the southern urban community. I’ve
launched Southern Smoke TV, a video on demand service for southern hip
hop. I’ve also established Fear Factor Music Group, an artist
development brand dedicated to breaking new music and new artists. If
you need help with your project, advice on the music industry, or
consultation on anything, dont hesitate to contact me at www.djsmallz.com.

6. Who are your fav. dj’s of all time?

DJ Clue – the godfather of mixtapes. When I first came into the game,
mixtapes weren’t even a movement down South, it was an east coast
thing. DJ Clue really helped make mixtapes commercial, especially be
establishing a DJ Clue album (“The Professional” series) that you
could go cop at major chain retail store like a Best Buy or Wal-Mart.
So I definitely looked up to Clue when I tried to establish that
similar formula down south.

7. Your internet game is on point, you got your own personal website www.djsmallz.com and then u have SouthernSmoke.tv, how hard is it to maintain those websites?

Definitley… its another hustle all together. I’m finishing up an
iphone app for djsmallz.com right now. Wait till you see it! Crazy…

8. Speaking of internet, how did it affect your career… and which websites do you visit the most?

When i first came into the game i was known as an “internet” dj
because i used the internet and advances in technology to my advantage
when most weren’t. I still do… it’s no secret.

9. Yo Smallz thanks for the interview brotha, is there anything else that you would like to say to your fans and mop visitors?

If you need to contact me for anything: mixtape hosting, beats, or
breaking your music send me a message on DJsmallz.com – that’s the
best way to get at me. Big shout to MusicOnPlay.net for holding me down always!!!

Interview by Chris

interview after the jump!

1. How did you get the name Lyriciss?

Simply put, I felt the name best describes me as an artist. It’s pretty easy to be a rapper. True MCs and lyricists really sit down work on the craft of penning verses that take skill to put together, using metaphors, similes, concepts…they take the time to paint pictures with words.

2. With the DMV being one of the most under-looked areas in the industry right now, how hard was it for you to get to where you are now?

Definitely, but it also just happened naturally with grind. I never came into this game with expectations like “man, I need to be famous THIS quick”, “I need to be this major”, etc. I just focus more on making good music and building a fanbase that truly loves the music and will stay loyal. Not to mention, I don’t even feel like I’ve done a whole bunch yet…I’m still the average joe. I’m still hitting the carryout like everybody else.

3. With artist like Wale and Tabi Bonney, who have already been known out D.C., do you find yourself trying to follow them? Or is your goal to just keep making good music?

I wouldn’t say follow, but they are very successful…I watch them. I study success, because as I said, I don’t have expectations, but I have aspirations. So when I see 2 artists like them coming from my area and succeeding like they are, I have no choice but to watch that. I’ve seriously been following both since EARLY in their career, so to see their progress is serious inspiration.

4. What do you think you bring to the table in regard to the D.C./MD/VA movement? What do you think that the DMV has that separates itself from the rest of the industry?

As far as myself…I just bring what I can to the table. A young artist with talent and grind that loves the DMV and wears it on his sleeve. The DMV is a badge of honor to me, because trust me…as an MC, if you can make it here, you can make it ANYWHERE. As far as the DMV compared to the industry…I couldn’t describe it. There’s a lot of dope artists here, man…too many to name. Not only are they dope, though, but they’re experienced…masters of their craft. Why? Because we never got the attention here. So we had nothing to do but make this music for the love and perfect what we do. That’s why you hear that crazy music out of nowhere from Wale, Tabi, Kingpen Slim, XO, RAtheMC, Phil Ade, Don Juan, Pro’Verb, etc. 5 years ago, the world would still think DC/DMV had nothing to do with hip-hop.

5. How has Lyriciss influence the game thus far?

I couldn’t tell you, man. It’s too early for me think I’ve influenced anything too much. I’ve influenced a lot of younger artists and just kids in the area in general, I’ve noticed. They always have so many questions and ask for advice….I never turn them away when it comes to that. They need that nowadays…they need someone to let them know what this music game is like, because if not, what are they going to know? BET and MTV? Big cars, fast women, big fake jewelry? That’s not a real image, man…they need someone to let them know about striving to perfect their music first and foremost…not chasing the bullshit, but pursuing the dream…keeping true to themselves.

6. What projects can we expect from Lyriciss this year?

I’m dropping my new mixtape, The Practice, in late October/early November. It will be hosted by Sirius XM’s own DJ Furious Styles, and presented by EQuinox Professionals, DMG, Inner Loop Records, & IllVibes-DMV.com, and might have a clothing company rocking with it too. I got some nice features on the tape, man…Pro’Verb, Cayan, K-Beta, Laelo Hood, Kingpen Slim, Fashawn, Shawn Chrystopher, & a couple more. Production from EQuinox Professionals, Jab The Future, G-Way, Mark Henry, Soulful, E-Minah, J-Scrilla, and more. After that tape, I’m dropping 2 EPs…The New Kid with J-Scrilla, and Voice Of The Metro with EQuinox Professionals. I’m dropping the first official LP next year, The Lyriciss Lounge Show.

7. If you had your choice, what major label do you think could use Lyriciss right now?

Whichever one gives me the best situation…a good amount of money, but more than that, my creative control, proper promotion, a good percentage of my masters/publishing, etc. I don’t really care about big names, flashy, all of that…put me in a good situation. Fame means nothing nowadays…most of the famous artists you see on 106 & Park everyday are broke and hiding it.

8. Who’s your favorite artist to work with in the DMV and why?

Pro’Verb, without a doubt. That’s EQ family, and we just vibe well on a track.

9. How would you describe yourself and the talent you possess?

Honestly, I wouldn’t. In all honesty, I wouldn’t. I’d tell you to listen to the music and decide for yourself. I find it so cocky when rap dudes describe theirselves and most of the time, they’re completely overhyping it. I wouldn’t even want to be one of those dudes. I’d rather you just check out the music and you let me know what you think.

10. How has music changed you, if it has at all?

Music gave me a release…without music, I might have seriously lost it by now. I had some issues growing up, man…I spent a lot of time at Children’s Hospital and seeing different psychologists and psychiatrists. I’m the middle child…the short kid…the outcast…I fought a lot…all of that type of stuff. So it had me fucked up mentally, to be completely honest. I wouldn’t even SPEAK to the doctors…but I would go write some lyrics in the notebook. Angry lyrics at that…the cliche tough rapper bullshit. It was a cover-up, really…I did my fair share of bullshit like any young dude, but I ain’t like it. As I got older, I just started speaking more from the heart in my words, and now you have what you hear nowadays.

11. Where can the fans reach Lyriciss?

To reach me personally, your best bet is Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/Lyriciss) or Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/lyriciss). Interview by Chris.

1. Everybody remembers when The Trak Starz released there first big production on Chingy’s “Right Thurr” single. Arguably the second reason to see so much success in St. Louis after Nelly and the St. Lunatics, how did it feel to finally record the track then would soon make you a multi-platinum producers?

ZO: We were always confident in what were doing & knew that “Right Thurr” would be a huge hit with the right push & vision. It felt good when the song exploded bcuz we knew we were making history in stl & the industry. Nelly open the doors but what we did solidified the stl music scene on a worldwide level.

3. You’ve been involved in other bands and groups before developing The Trak Starz. Why Trak Starz? Why the change?

ZO: We were both music producers while being in bands & rap groups… We thought it would b a good move 2 combine our resources and have a complete movement. Recording, live musicians, rappers, hooks, songs & traks.

4. How much success has The Trak Starz had after forming there own record label?

SHAM: Since forming our record label, we were given a joint venture with Universal Records. We also were able to make new joint venture and grow our publishing companies to be able to sign and develop new & established writers.

5. Who’s your favorite artist to come up from St. Louis?

ZO: Fav artist out of Stl r Nelly & Chingy… They both impacted music on a global level.

6. The Trak Starz now have received many awards for there production ability. What are sum of your most proud monents while accomplishing these goals?

SHAM: Proudest moment was a receiving the grammy nominations & awards…

7. Now i understand you also are able to write songs as well. Are there any songs that you’ve written that may be familiar to your fans?

ZO: Yes we write as well… We actually wrote Holiday Inn 4 (Chingy) & co-wrote I Like That 4 (Houston)…

8. Whats coming on for The Trak Starz? Any album you working on?

Interview by Ilir.

1. Hi Cormega, how’s everything going… where’ve you been?

I’ve been home getting my mind right writing.

2. How long have you been working on your new project “Born And Raised”?

This album took over 5 years to make.

3. What makes this album different from your previous releases?

There’s many differences. I experimented with live instruments for the first time without the assistance of a producer and the subject matter is different from my previous albums. Also I worked with some dope producers in the past, but never in my life had a producer line up like this.

4. How was it working with so many legends, for this project and can you mention some of them for those that don’t know?

For Born & Raised, I got production from DJ Premier, Large Professor, Easy Mo Bee, Havoc, Buckwild, DR Period, LES, Nottz, Fuzzy Womack, Ayatollah, Khrysis and then we have featured appearances from Big Daddy Kane, Parish Smith, Grand Puba, KRS-One, Tragedy, Havoc, and Lil Fame. Marley Marl did the intro on ”Prelude” and Red Alert did the intro on “Mega Fresh X” (produced by Buckwild).

It was dope to work with the legends I was in awe watching Kane do his verse. I wish I took a picture or filmed it. Puba is cool as a person can be , Parish Smith and me got into some deep conversations, KRS is KRS what more can I say, and Red Alert is the man. I was in awe being in studio with Easy Mo Bee and Premier just took me to another level, so it was crazy doing this album.

5. Except your new album what else can we expect from Cormega in the near future?

You can expect a lot and I got dope people around me ready to make music from producers to artist.

6. Is there anything else that you would like to say to your fans and MOP visitors?

I would like to thank my fans for years of support and say I really love them.

Ilir interviewed Guru & Solar while they were in Berlin at Soundcheck, they spoke about their new project “Guru 8.0 (Lost & Found)”, real hip hop, auto-tune, future plans, touring, and much more. Read the interview after the jump!

1. What’s up guys, how ya doin’?

We are great! Doing our thing out on the global grind! Currently rocking the Europe side of our Guru 8.0 Lost and Found Tour. The tour has been sold out. We started in Geneva Switzerland, 5k people at Scene Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival. Then in Hungary at the Balaton Sound Festival 10k people. Then we did a venue in Austria with 3k people, Then to a classic Jazz venue on London’s Oxford St in the UK called The 100 Club where people like Chuck Berrie, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, and many others played once before. The pictures of all the great artists and vibes were phenomenal. Then the next night in Southampton UK for 500 rowdy kids and had 6 local acts open up. There were B-Boy showcases etc. It was off the chain and we kicked it with some of the local talent and gave them some advice and pointers as we do at 7 Grand. Then was a 1500 people blazed out show in Haarlem Netherlands last night and tonight we are in Berlin Germany. The prestigious Stockholm Jazz Festival is next and we will be going back to NY after that with more US and overseas dates coming.

2. Lets talk about your new album ”Guru 8.0 (Lost and Found)”, who’s featured on it and how long did it take to get it done?

Solar: We have done two Jazzmatazz related releases before tis new jump off and since Jazzmatazz is a feature driven project that showcases ‘the a rt of collaboration” we wanted to come with a a pure Hip Hop album for
09 that’s all about Guru w/ Solar and the famo. It’s Real Hip Hop for 09, It’s brings solutions as opposed to just a bunch of complaints about Hip Hop and what it lacks needs etc. In our travels around the world everyone has had something to say so we came with some answers.
We worked on it about a year and a half in between tour with our last release The Timebomb Mix Cd.

Guru: Guru 8.0 Lost and Found features the legendary Guru aka Mr Gangstarr, as well as Dj Doo Wop The Mix tape legend from the BX who is also our resident tour DJ and a member of the
7 Grand roster on a joint called “No Gimmick Sh*t”. Then we have K.
Born and Highpower outta Philadelphia PA doing they’re thing on 3 joints “Read Between Tha Linez’, “When U Least Expect” and “6 Cipher”
they got that necessary streewise intelligence for the times right now.
Then we got the UK Soulman Omar on a joint called “Ride”. Also, Solar makes his debut as an emcee on this album on the incredible Banga called “After Time’! The album is about Guru and the 7 Grand fam, we kept it tight.

3. For those that dont know… how/when did yall 2 team up?

Guru: We were introduced 7 years ago by a mutual friend and just hit it off beyond all the music and fame as real men and started hanging tough and tearing NY up a lil something…Solar had heat and I knew it but we w ere peeps for about 2 years before he even played me anything. One night I went to the lab with him and he played me jointz and I was blown away. I started writing right there to a joint from Guru Version 7.0 The Street Scriptures called “Hall Of Fame”. I knew that night that Solar had the sound that was going to perfect for adding a new illustrious chapter on to an already great career. He is a complete producer and vastly talented. I talked to him about starting a label after I had complained so much about my situation back then with the major label machine and how I could ‘t stand the A&R’s who were not from the culture nor the streets trying to tell me how my creativity should flow. Solar was like..”Man if it’s like that, start your own label then, you’re an Icon!” He felt also that New York and the East Coast was not represented by “The Bling Era” and that era killed the Golden Era and rook alot of NY’s credibilty out of the game. 7 Grand represents that balance and that real intelligent streetwise creative and essential leadership for Real Hip Hop today! I quit drinking back then and got focused as Solar and I went into biz in late 2004. We dropped Guru Version 7.0 The Street Scriptures in 2005 and it was one of the top selling indie releases of that year. We dropped Jazzmatazz Vol 4 in August 2007 and Solar’s production gave the legacy a new reinvigoration.

Solar: We had everyone from Common, to Damien Mar ley, Bob James. Blackalcious, Slum Village, Caron Wheeler, Vivian Green, Kem, Raheem DeVaughn, Omar, Ronnie Laws, David Sanborn and more. This we did independently with no backing…just us! Then we dropped the Timebomb Mix Cd in Feb 08 and now the new joint, Guru 8.0 Lost and Found came out may 19th. We are a boutique artist driven label that has now become a movement…We are committed the this art and culture and have no desire to ever sell-out. We are men of the people! The major label that

Guru: The major label that I was on dropped the ball put GangStarr over here and Jazzmatazz over there and fragmented everything insdtead of keeping the history cohesive. 7 Grand now represents the continuum and is a parent company that encompasses GangStarr Jazzmatazz and all of the great new music Guru and I do.. This way we all come together in a positive fashion and enjoy the rich heritage as well as the new brilliance!

4. How is the auto tune effecting Hip Hop, and are you a supporter of D.O.A. (Death Of Auto tune) movement?

Guru: Autotune tune is just another digital effect. It can be used in cool ways if you know what you are doing. Solar did the damn thing on this album and his production style is probably the most advanced amongst any and all producers out there in the game wether anyone will admit it or not.

Solar: We embrace the new technology and often might ways to use it. We can rem ember being in Jamaica 5 years ago hearing early Movado, Busy Signal and Vibez Cartel songs with Autotune way before any rap guys used it.
It’s just a tool like a drum machine or eq effect.

Guru: As far as anything else, we do not follow trends ever…we are simply doing our thing.

5. Now that you’re on tour can you tell us how is hip-hop being perceived from a global perspective?

Solar: From a global perspective, mostly the Headz are more advanced as they study American Hip Hop and it’s history so as to embrace it and to know more about us and our society. They are advanced and progressive in the way they think and they gave Guru and Solar love from the gate. They are connected with the root of Hip Hop.

Guru: They live and breathe the intelligence of Hip Hop. They have developed their own scenes and now support each other in their own markets and put out their own brands of Hip Hop for their own cultures and languages.

7. What is considered “real hip-hop” overseas?

Guru and Solar, 7 Grand is the realest example for them! After that it’s their own local scenes….

Guru and Solar: The Guru and Solar Lost and Found Tour! Plus, each territory has their own local scene that they support. It’s bananas out here. Overseas they definitely have preserved our Hip Hop Culture with aspects of Graffiti, Turntablism and B-Boy Dance and International Emceeing that has kept things tigh t while we have been wrestling with materialism and a bunch of dumbned down madness in the States…

Interview by Chuck.

Pablo P is the regional representative for TS in the Central Florida area (Tampa, Orlando, Daytona). He’s also a familiar radio personality in the community known as “Voice of the City”. He’s been doing that for over 10 years.

1. Hi Pablo, how’s everything going… what’ve you been up to lately?

Hey Chuck 1st off thanks for giving us this interview, we really appreciate this! Things are going real well. I keep my head up high and thank God for living another day and in good health.

2. Can you tell us more about the Big Pun Legacy project, who came up with the idea, who made it happen etc?

The Big Pun Legacy Project was a concept I had come up with a few years ago. I always had this vision of putting together a project that would put Pun in the best light and to help keep his memory alive. For sometime now, I have been asking producers, engineers, djs, basically anyone who would give up their time and talent towards this but time and time again, I was told that it was a wasted effort, that people have moved on beyond Pun and that
this simply would not amount to anything. Of course, in my heart, I DID NOT BELIEVE THEM! Well this project really started taking shape when I came to know about an upcoming producer, Raul Cruz. He had shown me some instrumentals and remix work that he had done with other various artists and I gotta tell you Chuck I was completely blown away by his body of work! I kept thinking to myself that if I can get Raul Cruz to commit to a project like this,
it will take off. After explaining to him the idea, he tells me quite bluntly, “Pablo, I got your back, lets do this!”.

3. We need a Big Pun movie man! How can we fans contribute to make this happen?

Well we believe that this will eventually happen only because Big Pun’s fans will never forget him. If I had learned anything from this experience, it is this: Big Pun still has a solid fan base even after almost 10 years since he’s left us. We are certain that the Legacy Album project as well as Big Pun: The Legacy Documentary will help make the Big Pun Movie a reality!

4. What’s next for you and TS?

With all the outpouring of support for the Pun project, we are considering doing a TS mixtape but it’s still in its early stages. I’m also gonna be pushing Raul Cruz’s music to all the labels who would like to have a listen to this man’s work. I believe Raul Cruz is the next big thing man and I want to be there when that happens!

5. As we all know Joe is working on his new album “JOSE II”, every Fat Joe track that leaked lately was dope… can you speak a lil on his new project?

Joe is one hard working dude and he puts in 110% effort in everything he does. He has been doing this for over 14 years and no one can deny that he still got it. Everyone gonna know that when the JOSE II album drops. He also had alot of fun putting this album together from all the video clips of him in the studio. All in all it’s gonna be a solid album with collabs from Ron Browz, Fabolous, Lil’ Kim, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Raekwon, and of course Akon.

6. How did the internet affect the Big Pun Legacy mixtape promo?

The internet is such a powerful marketing tool. We had spent 3 months pushing Legacy to all the hiphop media outlets, online magazines, hiphop blogs, youtube, myspace, facebook, basically anywhere where we can find Pun’s die hard fans. Within the 1st 5 days of release, Big Pun Legacy Mixtape topped 100,000 downloads and it’s still climbing!

7. Now that Khaled’s the prez. of Def Jam south… how’s everything lookin’ like in the TS camp?!

There has been talk about putting together another TS album in which Khaled would take charge in and I still believe thats in the works. That album would include any new members that had recently signed on with TS. And definitely Khaled is someone who I would push Cruz’s music to! I believe they would work well together.

8. Any last message for the MOP visitors, and Big Pun x Terror Squad fans?

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You guys are the ones who truly made this Legacy Mixtape take off! Tell all your friends about it and spread the word! Together we can make things happen…together we can keep Pun’s memory alive…BIG PUN FOREVER!

Chris (MusicOnPlay) sits down with the sweet and friendly, DJ Seiko. She reflects on her life growing up in Japan, and her adulthood as a hip-hop DJ and role model for young women. As she’s said herself, “the Quiet one is the dangelous one,” but dont sleep on this lil mama.

Interview w/ DJ Seiko after the jump!

1. For those who dont know, DJ Seiko was born in Japan. Tell us a little bit about your life growing up there.

I was born in Fussa-city (uptown west side of Tokyo). Fussa is occupied by the US Air Force, so when u go outside, you see those planes in the sky practicing and American style shops everywhere, Sometimes you can use US dollars to buy stuff too when you come to my city I grew up in a very international n friendly city.and my moms side of my family has their own business right next to where we live. It’s a nursery school (between age 0-6), so weekdays, I always see/hear those little kids running around, jumpin, singing and smiling…And my dad’s side of the family was hunting/breeding dogs so there was so many smart doggies in the house..lol, I LOVE DOGGIES! My grandfather was diplo of the hunting team. On the weekends they took me and the dogs to hunt deer, bulls, and birds up in the mountains with a lot of big guns. It was wild…Then after we hunted, we would bring them back home and cook stew and eat it with everybody. Sounds like a Flintstone’s life right?…lol
I almost ate a bullet once too that was in the stew. They forgot to take it out..lol.
So I kinda grew up with a little bit of everything mixed up; schooly stuff and wild natures with the dogs and animals, then living in the international city in Tokyo.

2. How did you first become involved in the Hip-Hop world as a DJ?

I was doing some kind of competition dancing in the clubs back in Japan…I was pop lockin on the floor, (lol) almost like a showcase between this DJ and another DJ switching on and off. But I started to feel like I wanna organize the sounds in the clubs to get everybody dancing…Thats how my DJ career started.

3. How hard was it for you when you first moved to the states to showcase yourself as a female DJ?

It was hard. I struggled for a while because I came here all by myself, no family, no friends…nothing!
So I started to go outside, meet the right people in the music/clubs scene…Then I met my manager Kevin Hunter & super radio diva Wendy Williams. I worked for them for a while as a model but i never told them i was a DJ while I was modeling for them. Then one day I told Kevin I can DJ as well and he was like word, let me find see. He put me in the DJ booth and I did some sets for him. He polished my skills and tought me how to move NY crowds and all those good tips. Then the next month he got me a Friday night DJ gig in NYC!

4. How would you separate yourself from all the other female DJ’s out there rite now?

I usually don’t look at DJs as male or female, I listen to them and find out whether I think this DJ sounds good or not. Every single DJs got their own style and own different things going on. Some do radios, some do clubs, some do mixtapes, some do tours for artists..all that! So my separation from other DJs is “I got that ear for the music”..I only fucks with good music and I know you can see how I get down on my mixtapes & club sets.

5. You have recently just dropped two mixtapes, “Bloomberg Series” and “Street Smart Vol.2?. Tell us about your success with these projects thus far.

“Bloomberg Series” was one of my biggest projects, let’s say it was “more than music”. I was listening to all kinds of mixtapes on the streets, and found out what makes people cop those mixtapes is “exclusive music on it” right? But its just hard to make it exclusive now a days because of the internet! People can download new music easily and move on! So I was like what if I put an exclusive interview with an artist on my mixtape?—That’ll be that “exclusive”. Then I brought this idea to super producer Dame Grease and he brought Max B to the project. Max B is one of my favorite recording artist, and Dame Grease is holding it down with all that Max B heats!! I had a lot of questions to ask to Max B too! At the same time, I thought the hip-hop listeners need to get more familiar with political stuff as well. By the time we dropped “Bloomberg Series” Vol.1, it was election time and people were paying attentions to political things. So I put NYC mayor Bloomberg voices on the mixtape. It was only free download on my podcast first, but everybody started downloading, and they posted to their own blogs. Alot of bootleggers spreaded “Bloomberg Series” all over the world, it bacame one of these big mixtape series! Now everybody asked me “when is the next bloomberg series coming?” Bloomberg Series Vol.2 is dropping soon!!

“Street Smart” is one of my favorite series! It’s strictry for the streets! I live in Harlem. I see, I hear, and am surrounded by all kinds of streets things, good and bad, and all those experiences brought my ear to the streets raps!! So all that music on “Street Smart” is whats going on in the streets. Gangsters, Guns, Drugs, Hustles, Pimpin, Cars, Money, Hoes and those Pains, etc..I wanted to put some real story tellers on “Street Smart”, because you can hear “club poppin songs” and “hey baby songs” on the radio and clubs all the time, but u don’t hear what’s really going on in the street on any of them.

6. Where did Seiko get her “Street Smarts“?

I get my Street Smart from the streets..all the Gangsters,Mafias,Yakuzas and OGs I know. I also get another side of Street Smart from Cops, Government, Professors, Teachers, Workers…etc People get confused all the time because I don’t look like a hoodied up, street raised girl. But people always eventually find out what it is about me, like somebody said the “Quiet one is the dangelous one.”

7. Whats been the biggest help for DJ Seiko? How have you been able to extend your fan-base? How has the internet media been a platform for you?

The biggest help for DJ Seiko is Good Music! If there is no Good Music, DJ Seiko is not here.

The internet media has been helping my movement a lot!! I pass my mixtapes on the streets hand to hand, but If there is no internet media around, a lot people are not able to download my Mixtapes. A lot of people are not able to book me to their parties. If there is no internet media around, a lot of people don’t even know my name! So I appreciate all the Internet medias who support DJ Seiko and good music!

Also getting shout outs from a lot of artists, and radio DJs (Big Shouts to Wendy Williams, she always blasting my name on the radio air wave!). Tthose shout outs are very important to getting my name out as well, so I appreciate the shout outs everybody has been giving me! And I just gotta keep on doing the right thing! Then people follow if they like what they see, or what they hear. It’s not about just numbers, it’s about how deep it is, how real it is, how dope it is….to me!

8. MusicOnPlay.net has been fortunate to team up to do a project with the sexy and talented, DJ Seiko. Tell your fans about it. Where will they be able to get it?

Yes, BIG shout out to MUSICONPLAY.NET for this hot mixtape collabo project! Right now me and MUSICONPLAY.NET are working on a Hot mixtape that you never heard! Please stay tuned for that! Come check out MUSICONPLAY.NET everyday to see if the mixtape is up or not! You will be able to download it only on MUSICONPLAY.NET!!! STAY TUNED!

9. What advice do you have for all those inspiring female DJ’s coming up?

All I can say is go outside and meet the right people!! Work and practice three times harder than others! Hard work will pay off!. We the females, we care about our looks too, I know. But when your go in, skin gets all bleedin, and your body system gets all fucked up, one ear might not work as well as the other, nail tips might pop off….but you still gotta prove yourself and go hard like a female DJ! Then people respect you when they hear what u got! You wanna be the DJ because you love music!! Gotta love music, like its your boyfriend!! Then you will find out how to treat them!!

10. How can your fans stay in touch with DJ Seiko?

Shout out to all my fans and listeners. Love you all…You can always chat with me onwww.twitter.com/djseiko
I always respond to whoever talk to me on twitter! For all the mixtapes, my bio, pictures and all that good stuff, you can see them here, www.myspace.com/djseiko or just bump into me on the streets! Im always in Harlem playing with my doggies, walking down the streets. Come say Hi!

1. Every DJ has his/her own name, and given that for a reason. Where did you get Blazita from and how?

I made it up. When I decided I was gonna go hard as a DJ I was attending Penn State University. I already had the name “Simpatica” (Spanish for nice girl) from my sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma. I knew that would be too hard to make work as a DJ name though. So on one of my many trips driving through the state of Pennsylvania I thought about “blaze” and then added the Spanish ending “ita”. I asked my mentor if he thought it was corny. He was like “no way look at all these other djs with crazy names that became popular – you can call yourself anything you want and when you get a buzz it will stick trust!”

2. How is it being a female in this industry, and how has it gotten you to where you are now?

Being a female in the music industry is fun but I don’t know that it has gotten me as far as working hard and being consistent has. I definitely go thru ups and downs as a female but I think everyone does when following their ambitions.

3. Do you feel a lot of competition from other DJ’s being a female?

Of course. Being a female probably makes me more of a threat (laughs).

4. Whats seperates Blazita from all the other DJ’s?

I sometimes wear a dress when I spin? (Laughs) Nah. I would say I’m pretty versatile. I have my ear to the streets and that’s where my mixtapes come in. On the other end I can DJ high end events or play a wide range of music. I also have a slight issue that when someone tells me no or that I can’t do something it motivates me even more to do that thing. So I plan to keep breaking thru the boundaries that may or may not be there because I’m a female and just rock out.

5. Whats been your favorite part about your DJ career?

Traveling outside of NYC to do events because I love to travel and it’s great to know you have a following in a city you don’t even live in! Also it’s fun making people have a good time – I love when people are hype in the clubs and dancing and all of the energy that comes from that.

6. Who have you had the most fun working with?

I love working with my close friend producer/ DJ UMC and his artist who is an MC & producer named Daath Nix. They’re extremely talented and creative coming up with wild ideas. I have a lot of fun with them in the studio and DJ UMC & I dropped a cd last year called 90s Piff that is still selling. They’re dropping the heat this summer so I’m really excited for their music to be in rotation.

7. Tell us about your success and the awards you have received thus far.

Well I won a Justo at the Mixtape Awards for Best Female DJ last year. My Sex & The City Series was nominated for Best Slow Jam and Best Blend cd at the Southern Entertainment awards this year.

8. Whats been your favorite project so far, and why?

I love my Sex & the City series because I love R&B from the 90s, but I don’t think I’ve put out my favorite project yet.

9. What is Blazita’s plans for summer ‘09?

To go hard in the clubs. To keep putting out quality mix projects. And you can catch me live in the mix every Saturday on www.AListRadio.net

10. What words do you have for all the females tryna get on your level?

Be consistent. Stick to what you believe in and don’t let anyone sidetrack you. And of course, practice.
